VISA Fraud: The Supreme Court today ordered that the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, Harsha Ilukpitiya, be held in custody at the Supreme Court premises until the court proceedings resume in the evening.

The Supreme Court today held the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, Harsha Ilukpitiya, in contempt of court for failing to implement its previous order, which had suspended a Cabinet decision approving online and expatriate visa operations in Sri Lanka. The court had directed Ilukpitiya to ensure the proper implementation of the court order, but he had failed to do so, resulting in the court holding him in contempt and ordering him to be held in custody until the evening proceedings.

In August, the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order to suspend the Cabinet’s decision to delegate the visa application process to a consortium comprising GBS Technology Services & IVS Global-FZCO as well as VFS VF Worldwide Holdings Ltd. The court had directed the Controller General to halt any implementation of the Cabinet decision, but Ilukpitiya had allegedly continued to facilitate the implementation of the online and expatriate visa operations in defiance of the court order.
