The new Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has been appointed as the new vice chancellor, the chairman of the department of pharmacology professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman. This information was informed in the notification signed by Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Deputy Secretary of Health Education and Family Welfare Department of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday, 27 August 2024. It is said in the notification, with the approval of His Excellency the President and Acharya, Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, BSMMU, Dhaka, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, has been appointed to the vacant post of Vice-Chancellor, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. His term of appointment as Vice-Chancellor will be 4 (four) years.

 




 

Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman is currently serving as the Chairman of Pharmacology Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Before this, he served as the Registrar of the University. He is the founder director of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cell of BSMMU and has been the key person in the establishment, implementation and integration of IT in the University’s activities.

Prof. Rahman has extensive experience working on various pharmaceutical policy and regulatory processes since his student days. He was one of the few medical students in Bangladesh who actively supported the National Drug Policy 1982. He participated in the National Drug Control Process as the youngest member. He then served as a member of various national level task forces, technical committees and working groups. He is one of the authors of Bangladesh National Formulary and Bangladesh Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practice.

For the past 32 years, he has been doing undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching. Prof. Rahman is the Chairman of IT Committee of Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons (BCPS). Prof. Rahman is also a member of Adverse Effect for Immunization, National Adverse Drug Reaction Advisory Committee and Ethics Review Committee of icddr,b. He was the Chairman of the National Research Ethics Committee and the National Pharmacovigilance Guideline Formulation Committee.

Professor Rahman is a member of various research grant committees of national and international organizations. In Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, he is serving as the chairman of Global Ranking Status Improvement Committee of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. He is one of the main people of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Upgradation of Antibiotic Guideline, Contract Research Organization Management Committee and Establishment of Biobank in Bangladesh.

Professor Rahman is the founding chairman of Bangladesh AMR Response Alliance (BARA)Ó. Moreover, Professor Rahman served as Bangladesh Country Coordinator of Fleming Fund.

Prof. Rahman has supervised more than 40 theses for PhD, MD, MPhil degrees under various universities. He has also served as examiner and reviewer of hundreds of MD, MS, MPhil theses in medical sciences under almost all universities in Bangladesh. Prof. Rahman has more than fifty publications in national and international journals. Professor Rahman’s research areas include National Drug Policy, Antimicrobial Resistance, Pharmacovigilance, Pharmacoeconomics, Clinical Trials, Medicine Utilization Studies, Medical Education and Animal Studies.

In recognition of his contribution to medical science in Bangladesh, Professor Rahman has been awarded Honorary Fellowship (FCPS) by the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). He was the “Principal Researcher” of the project titled “Establishment of National Antimicrobial Consumption Monitoring System” of the World Health Organization.
