The new Pro Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has been appointed as the new Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam Hepatology (Liver) Department of the University. This information was informed in a notification signed by Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Deputy Secretary of Health Education and Family Welfare Department of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on 1 September 2024 Sunday.

 



 

It is said in the notification, with the approval of His Excellency the President and Acharya, according to Section 15 (1) of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Act, 1998, the chairman of the Hepatology Department of BSMMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam has been appointed to the vacant post of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. His tenure as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will be for 4 (four) years.

Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam is a leading researcher of Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease and a pioneering scientist in the country. Not only in the country, he has made special contributions in various fields including diagnosis, management of fatty liver disease for the Asia Pacific region. Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam has co-authored many research papers with scientists from Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. He is the Lead Local Scientist of Scopus Indexing BSMMU.

Prof. Shahinul Alam has been awarded 7 international awards including Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), American Association for the Study of the Liver (AASLD), USA-Japan Joint Medical (USJMSCP-NIH-APASL). He is a member of the US-based organization Global Nash Council.

Prof. Shahinul Alam MD served as Course Coordinator of Hepatology Course and Member Secretary of Course Curriculum in the same subject. He is the Principal Investigator of various research projects at BSMMU.

Member Secretary of the Institutional Quality Assurance Committee (IQAC) of the Department of Hepatology of the University. As a distinguished scientist, Professor Shahinul Alam has 160 publications on the subject of hepatology. He has presented his research papers in 15 international conferences including UK, Singapore, India, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey and Hong Kong. He is a member of the editorial board of World Journal of Hepatology. He currently contributes as a reviewer to the world’s leading scientific publishers, including Elsevier, Springer, Blackwell Publishing, Wiley and Springer Nature. His extracurricular activities have been awarded by Scout Jamboree, National Science Fair and Bangladesh Shishu Academy. Prof. Md. Alam is serving as General Secretary of Hepatology Society, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Professor Dr. Alam is a member of Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver, European Association for the Study of the Liver. He is an Associate Member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and a Member of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is a Life Member of The Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver and Indian Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Professor Dr. Md. Alam is working on the medical economics of middle-class and low-income patients in Bangladesh. During his career, he worked as an Assistant Surgeon at Hatia Upazila Health Complex, Junior Consultant of Medicine at Patuakhali General Hospital and Assistant Registrar and Registrar of Medicine at Sher Bangla Medical College Hospital.
