This April, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Sri Lanka (MMCA Sri Lanka) invites you to experience their exhibition ‘Total Landscaping’ like never before! It is packed with free curator-led tours, interactive exhibition walks, and special Tamil and Sinhala language tours. These free public programmes offer fresh perspectives on how land shapes identity, memory, and culture, and they are offered as part of ‘Total Landscaping’. The exhibition is open to you free of charge until 29 May 2025 at the MMCA Sri Lanka, located on the ground floor of Crescat Boulevard, Colombo 3.
Join a Curator’s Tour with Senior Curator Sandev Handy and Assistant Curator Thinal Sajeewa, as they unveil the narratives behind ‘Total Landscaping’. These tours provide rare insights into artists’ perspectives, the exhibition’s themes, and the curatorial process. Sandev will lead two tours on Sunday, 6 and 27 April, from 11 am to 12 noon. Thinal will conduct his tour on Saturday, 19 April, from 11 am to 12 noon. These free Curator’s Tours are perfect for art enthusiasts, students, and inquisitive minds, offering a unique chance to interact with Sri Lankan modern and contemporary art!
A highlight for this month’s public programmes is the Special Behind-the-Scenes of Exhibition Design Tour on Saturday, 26 April from 11 am to 12 pm. In this special tour, you are invited to join exhibition designer Jonthan Edward, and co-curators of the exhibition Sandev and Thinal as they go behind the scenes of designing ‘Total Landscaping’.
If you would like to have even more conversations about art, our Visitor Educators will guide you through ‘Total Landscaping’ in free, engaging, and discussion-based Exhibition Tours. We are thrilled to offer special free Sinhala and Tamil language tours on 17 and 24 April respectively from 5 to 6pm, making contemporary art more accessible to all. A free English language tour will also be available on 10 April from 5 to 6 pm, giving everyone the chance to appreciate the brilliance of Sri Lankan contemporary art.
Featuring 29 Sri Lankan contemporary artists, ‘Total Landscaping’ redefines how we see land not just as scenery but as a living, contested, and ever-changing space. The exhibition explores ecology, displacement, and the hidden stories embedded in Sri Lanka’s terrain through paintings, drawings, photographs, publications, sculptures, videos, and installations.
These free public programmes are designed to make contemporary and modern art accessible and enjoyable to all, including students and the general public in Sri Lanka. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a curious student, these Curator’s Tours and Exhibition Tours offer a chance to deepen your understanding of Sri Lankan contemporary and modern art, while fostering connections with fellow visitors. Admission to the museum and all public programmes is free, making it an ideal destination for local cultural enrichment.
