Teejay Lanka PLC, Sri Lanka’s only multinational textile manufacturer, was adjudged the Best Textile Exporter in Sri Lanka at the 2019 Presidential Export Awards presented by the Export Development Board (EDB).
The ‘Best Exporter Award –Textile Sector’ presented to the Company at the 23rd edition of this awards programme, marked Teejay Lanka’s debut at this prestigious event.
The award was presented to Teejay Lanka Deputy CEO Mr Pubudu De Silva and the Company’s General Manager EU Brands, Corporate Communication & CSR Ms Samadhi Weerakoon, by Ms Indira Malwatte, Chairperson & Chief Executive of the EDB and Justice D. J. De S. Balapatabendi at the BMICH.
“We are delighted to win this accolade especially because it comes at a time when the Company has been investing significantly in expansion of capacity and upgrading of technology and processes,” Teejay Lanka CEO Mr Shrihan Perera said. “We expect these developments to enable us to venture into new export markets in the years ahead, while consolidating our engagements with domestic customers.”
Teejay Lanka PLC reported total revenue of US$ 108 million for 2018-19, of which 77 per cent was generated by sales to Sri Lankan customers including Brandix, MAS and Omegaline, and 23 per cent was generated by exports to customers in Bangladesh, Kenya, Italy, India, and Vietnam.
The Company has been steadily increasing its direct exports with a year-on-year growth of 177 per cent in 2017-18, and 28 per cent in 2018-19.
The Presidential Export Awards initiated by the EDB in 1981 are the highest recognition of exporters in Sri Lanka for outstanding contributions to the national economy.
