Sri Lanka, 21st August 2024 –The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) and World Vision Lanka (WVL) announced the conclusion of their 18-month Accelerating & Strengthening the Plastic Informal Recycling Eco-System (ASPIRE) project. The event, which felicitated resource collectors under the ASPIRE project, included the presence of Her Excellency Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka, Julie J. Chung, and Hon. Ajith Mannapperuma, M.P. and Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Natural Resources & Sustainable Development.
Launched in early 2023, the ASPIRE project aimed to support PET plastic collection and recycling practices in Sri Lanka by empowering local communities integral to the waste management landscape. Over the past year and a half, it supported resource collectors through training programs and provided essential machinery and tools such as baler machines, jumbo bags and protective gear. In addition to supporting PET plastic collection, these collectors helped advocate for responsible waste disposal within their communities in the Wattala and Ja-Ela region.
The day’s proceedings included panel discussions involving partners, stakeholders, and resource collectors.
Local communities participated in awareness campaigns and environmental cleaning drives organized by ASPIRE. These initiatives helped educate communities about the importance of recycling. Strategic partnerships with government entities such as the Waste Management Authority and Ministry of Environment were integral to ASPIRE’s success, facilitating policy support, resource allocation, and essential infrastructure development for sustainable waste management practices.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung remarked, “I’m proud to see two foundations with roots in America create such impact in Sri Lanka. The U.S. supports such initiatives globally because they drive meaningful change, enhance communities, and address critical challenges like plastic waste. The remarkable outcomes of TCCF’s projects on agriculture, public health, and livelihoods underscore our shared commitment to improving lives and fostering sustainable development worldwide.”
