In 1824 a tea plant was smuggled to Ceylon by the British from China. 43 years, later in 1867, a British planter called James Taylor started the first tea plantation. This marked the beginning of the tea industry in Sri Lanka. Today Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth largest producer of tea, it employs over 1 million people and is one of the country’s main sources of foreign exchange.
In recognition of this history, Tamba Villas named all 37 of their villas after Tea Estates. Ferndale, Chalcot, Westward, Dorset, Beverly, Marlby, Norwood and Seafield- the names are all deeply evocative, with each conjuring up a place and time in Sri Lanka’s recent past.
Tamba Villas is a collaboration between Shakticola and Award-winning A D Lab, a Singaporean Architectural firm focused on cutting edge residential projects, while STIX, another award-winning landscape designer designed the lush tropical gardens.
Tamba Villas envisages a style of life which is at once both Tropical and Modern, Asian and Western. Waterways drift through the property. Dwelling on rippling pools and ponds, courtyards and terraces overlook vibrant, living gardens. The environment is a riot of sound and colour, evoking the lush gardens of Sri Lanka’s tea estates.
Tamba is made up of villas. They occupy two levels, the Garden and the Gallery: there are also stand-alone villas called cottages. In tune with the environment, the living spaces are open and spacious. Balconies and verandahs adorn the rooms, gazing out on flowering plants, shrubs and spreading lawns.
The buildings speak for themselves. Visual beauty is combined with the comfort and technology of modern life. Every villa has been designed to the very last detail with the greatest care. Each one has its own pool and is surrounded by its own private garden. Equipped to the highest international standards, the interiors cater to all the demands of contemporary living.
The American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, “Jim” Rohn once observed: “Whatever good things we build end up building us.” [Emanuel James Rohn 1930 – 2009]
It is a philosophy which appealed to the builders of Tamba. It is also appears to be appealing to its buyers. At Tamba Villas Sri Lanka’s tea estates are selling out! In short the ‘The Good things are going fast.’ “At Ferndale, the Garden apartment has just been sold. So has the Gallery at Beverly. At Westward, both the Garden and the Gallery apartments have gone, while Chalcot Villa has also been sold. So has Dorset”, said an elated Eduard Hempel , Director & Co-Project Principal for Tamba Villas. “Tamba Villas hearkens back to a bygone era where leisure and sheer gentility were the order of the day. Serenity, respite and tranquillity, combined with modern day 5-star amenities and luxury pampering, will be our hallmark”, said Hempel.
As there are a mere collection of 37 homes, all of which have been designed by an award-winning Singaporean Architectural team, to create a coastal lifestyle design with high-end amenities for living, working or early retiring in a much sought-after area in the south of Sri Lanka, Tamba Villas are not going to be left long on the property market. “the fact that foreigners can now own their Free-hold, which opens up the doors globally is fantastic news for investors and developers alike and will definitely be a boost for Sri Lanka’s economy.
Hempel and Trevor Morgan Director & Co-Project Principal for Tamba Villas, expect to commence construction of this unique and niche development project in early 2019, while completion of Tamba Villas is estimated to be around late 2020.
