Sri Lanka’s leader in next generation energy technologies and Solar PV Systems, JLanka Technologies continues to disrupt the country’s conventional energy industry by having taken on a remarkable journey alongside one of Sri Lanka’s leading business conglomerates, the Jafferjee Brothers. In this global village of a rapidly developing world, Jafferjee Brothers turned to the island’s premier in solar power solutions, JLanka Technologies in their process of contributing to the country’s sustainable growth by making use of renewable energy sources.
Jafferjee Brothers, the family owned business conglomerate that deals with an expanding international client base has its’ manufacturing facilities deep-rooted in Sri Lanka. Having embarked on 2 major projects with JLanka Technologies, the Jafferjee Brothers have now mostly turned to solar power to satiate their industrial energy requirements. Of the 2 projects that were carried out, one is to generate 594kW of power. A total of 1828 Trina Solar Panels of 325W power each alongside 19 Inverters of 27.6kW and 914 Optimizers of 700W were utilized to bring this project together. While this project is basked in its’ own glory, the second project is far more exquisite in terms of technology.
“Upon having briefed about the newest technology in the industry, it felt flawed to limit the project to the rudimentary Solar PV Systems. Alongside the guidance and support provided by the outstanding team at JLanka Technologies, we decided to initiate the use of the half cell technology, recently introduced by Trina Solar, for bold initiations is what paves way to the top,” commented SLSEA accredited Eng. Sarath Jayathilake, General Manager of Renewable Energy Projects of Jafferjee Brothers.
For the first time ever in Sri Lanka the Half Cell technology introduced by Trina Solar was equipped in a project that turned out to be exceptional. The half cell technology is just as the name makes it seem. It is the generally used solar cell cut into 2 halves and connected in series. It’s a technology that has cut down on the electrical resistance of the ribbon while increasing its’ efficiency by 2%. 2668 Trina Solar panels of 375W each of Half Cut technology and 34 Inverters of 27.6kW and 1334 Optimizers of 800W constituted the second installation. This latest technology used upon the client’s sole requirement comes with quite an array of benefits that include extended durability, high revenue, and assured reliability amongst many more.
The Journey from Pre-feasibility study to Commissioning was quite challenging. The client was heavily involved in everything from the selection of Technology, Modules and Inverters to the planning of the installation taking into consideration all details of the design and benefits of the system. Grid Connection was very exciting. This was one of the first projects in the country categorized as an Industrial 3 Supplier. Separate step up transformers and MV panels which comply with CEB Grid codes were used in grid interconnection to the CEB MV lines. The 1000KW net plus installation at Grandpass was the first solar project in Colombo City to be interconnected to the 11KV underground ring main system. Our installation team took intensive care and measures in handling these projects to ensure maximum benefit for the client. Instead of simply piecing together the Solar PV Systems and fixing them on the roof, these personal carried out a thorough check on the surroundings and the environment these solar solutions would be placed in. They pondered not once even when they went to the lengths of strengthening the roof and adjusting elevation angles to make sure the installation was completely foolproof for it was fixed on a roof that’s been held up for over 60 years. 1.6MW is now commissioned. Jafferjee Brothers is willing to strengthen their arms by adding another 8 number of 1MW ground mounted projects, under the successful tender of 1MWx60 CEB- Sooriy Bala Sangramaya Phase 2. Projects will be installed Grid areas of Mahiyangana, Mahawa and Kilinochchi. “commented by SLSEA Accredited, Eng.
