Colombo, Sri Lanka, 15 January 2025: St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, proudly celebrated 160 years of excellence in human and Christian education, reaffirming its legacy. This is a unique feat, as it is one of the very few schools to boast a rich history spanning 160 years of existence.
During this period, St. Benedict’s College has produced prominent figures in various sectors, including religion, academia, the corporate world, entertainment, the military, and politics. This milestone event was held at the college premises on 3 January and was graced by the director of the college, sub-directors, staff, alumni, students, parents, and over 3,000 invitees.
The celebrations commenced with Rev. Bro. Dr. Pubudu Rajapaksha delivering the opening speech, followed by a Eucharistic Adoration led by Rev. Fr. Darrel Coonghe, reflecting the deep spiritual values that form the foundation of the college’s legacy. The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the anniversary logo and the vision for St. Benedict’s College in the years ahead. The specially designed logo, developed to mark the celebrations under the theme “160 and Beyond,” was unveiled to the audience during a celebratory fireworks display. It symbolises the college’s commitment to transformation and innovation while honouring its legacy in the context of 21st-century learning.
Among the key initiatives announced as part of the 160th-anniversary celebrations is the launch of the college’s groundbreaking STEM education programme on 17 January. This pioneering initiative aims to nurture a new generation of innovative and forward-thinking individuals, equipping them with the skills necessary for success in a rapidly evolving world and enabling them to face the challenges of the future.
With the directive to “dream big” from the 160th Steering Committee Chairman, Mr. Gratien Fernando, the committee devised an exciting lineup of events to mark the 160th anniversary in 2025. These events aim to unite St. Benedict’s College’s alumni community in a vibrant celebration of its rich heritage. Highlights of the event calendar include a two-day learning festival, a musical showcasing the college’s home-grown talent, a commemorative walk, a car parade, and a carnival.
Founded in 1865, St. Benedict’s College holds the distinction of being the oldest Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Colombo. Administered by the Lasallian Brothers (F.S.C.), the institution has been a beacon of academic excellence and values-driven education for generations.
