Sri Lanka’s first ever global certification for a corporate road traffic safety management system awarded to INSEE Cement Sri Lanka

INSEE Cement, Sri Lanka’s #1 cement brand and solutions provider, has been awarded the ISO 39001:2012 certification, in recognition of its road traffic safety (RTS) management system. This is the first time a private sector entity in Sri Lanka has received this certification.

INSEE Cement Sri Lanka – registered as Siam City Cement (Lanka) Limited – is a member of the Siam City Cement Public Company Limited (SCCC) based in Thailand. INSEE Cement Sri Lanka is also the first among the SCCC Group to receive the certification.

“ISO 39001:2012 is a landmark certification for Sri Lanka. It recognizes the proactive measures INSEE has taken to ensure that our road safety management system is in line with globally recognized international standards,” says Jan Kunigk, Chief Executive Officer of INSEE Cement Sri Lanka. “Corporate entities have a responsibility to ensure their respective operations adhere to strict, effective and efficient measures to make the roads safer for the people in Sri Lanka. We are ready to help others do the same and improve their road safety culture.”

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 39001:2012 was awarded to INSEE Cement by Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection and certification.  The certification covers both INSEE Cement and its waste management arm INSEE Ecocycle. It provides the template for the best practice for road management in an organizational context. It is designed to help organizations reduce, and ultimately eliminate, incidents and risk of deaths and serious injuries due to road traffic crashes.

“INSEE Cement logistics operations cover over 20 million kilometers each year due to our broad distribution network reaching the four corners of Sri Lanka and the scale of our operations.  With this certification, we are confident that our road traffic safety management system is helping increase road safety, lower road traffic incident rates and curb the risk of injuries or fatalities in our operations,” says Randika Moses, Head of Health and Safety for INSEE Cement in Sri Lanka.”

According to the National Council for Road Safety, road traffic accidents are the root cause of an average of eight deaths per day in Sri Lanka. Each year up to 38,000 road traffic accidents take place around the country.

The ISO 39001:2012 certification contributes to three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals; Goal 3 focusing good health and wellbeing, Goal 11 which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and Goal 12 which centers on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.
