SLT-MOBITEL extends National Tree Planting Program to Kundasale and Meerigama

Helping to improve air quality and promote climate change, SLT-MOBITEL the National ICT Solutions Provider organised two more Mee Tree planting programs in Kundasale and Meerigama recently. The project, which commenced in January 2022 has to-date completed five tree planting programs in locations such as Monaragala, Melsiripura, Anuradhapura, Colombo and at the SLT head office in Colombo.

The Kundasale initiative was organized by the SLT-MOBITEL Kandy Customer Club, with the participation of SLT-MOBITEL staff and customers. 250 Mee and Kumbuk saplings were planted across approximately two hectares near the Victoria Reservoir at Kundasale. Notably, these saplings were planted after removing Giant Mimosa (Yoda Nidikumba) trees present in the area, which has been identified as an invasive plant.

Anuruddha Rathnayake, General Manager Central and Uva Region and Anuruddha Suriarachchi, General Manager, Marketing Services represented SLT while Romesh John, Regional Head Sales of Mobitel participated at the event. The Kandy Customer Club was represented by Buddika Samarasinghe, Chairman, Jayampathi Jayakody, Secretary and Daya Thisera, Treasurer along with senior officials of the club and their family members. Officials from the Divisional Secretary, Kunadasale were also present.

Another tree planting program was held at Seth Sewana Elders home, Meerigama where over 150 Mee saplings and other fruit trees were planted in partnership with Hirdaramani Industries Pvt Ltd, Kuruwita.

The Meerigama Tree planting program was attended by Anuruddha Suriarachchi, General Manager, Marketing Services, Anne Fernando, Deputy General Manager, Marketing Services, and Pubudu Samarasinghe, Manager, OPMC, Nittabuwa representing SLT. Rasika Kakulawala, Regional Manager, Mobitel, Duminda Jayasanka, Maintenance Manager, Hirdaramani Industries Pvt Ltd, Kuruwita together with staff members, the Manager and members of the Seth Sewana Elders home and staff members of the Meerigama Pradeshiya Saba were also present. 

The National ‘Mee’ Tree Planting Program is being held under the theme ‘රට පුරා හුස්මයි පොහොරයි වගා කරමු’ (Let’s nourish the country with clean air and fertilizer) in a bid to improve air quality and mitigate the effects of climate change for a sustainable future. To-date over1200trees have been planted across 06 locations in the country.
