The Faculty of Engineerign of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) presents ‘Young Engineering Expo 2023’ (YEE’2), the annual engineering exhibition, showcasing the talents of first-year engineering undergraduates.
Held after a lapse of three years, Young Expo 2023 will feature innovations for industry solutions in solving real-world engineering problems. The event will take place at the Faculty of Engineering premises at SLIIT Malabe Campus on the 19th of July, 2023. With the ingenuity of the engineering students, the expo will feature 50 exhibits addressing real-world problems they have identified.
The commercial solutions presented demonstrate students’ ability to combine imparted theory together with learning processes, adopting out-of-the-box thinking to create practical commercial-level solutions for real-world industry challenges.
The event will be graced by Prof. Lakshman Ratnayake, Chairman of SLIIT; Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice- Chancellor/Managing Director of SLIIT; Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Prof. Nimal Rajapaksa; Deans of the faculties and academic staff. Industry experts from top corporates and SLIIT partners will also attend the exhibition to view the innovations of the talented, budding engineers. This will enable engineering students to network with industry specialists and even secure market opportunities for their inventions.
Commenting on the exhibition, Madhawa Herath, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering said, “Young Expo 2023 demonstrates our steadfast commitment to empowering the next generation of engineers. We take immense pride in showcasing the exceptional innovation and talent our students possess. This event serves as a catalyst for aspiring engineers to connect, learn, and explore avenues to shape their future. We believe this exhibition is an ideal opportunity for industry members to visit and view the innovations and engage in possible solutions that may be commercialized for the marketplace.”
SLIIT has invited students from several schools to participate in Young Expo 2023 and explore the conceptualization and implementation of technical solutions using theoretical knowledge. School students will have the opportunity to tour the the laboratories of Faculty of Engineering of SLIIT and experience the state-of-art facilities fitted with cutting-edge equipment, technology, and superior functionalities. Furthermore, admission to the exhibition will be free of charge.
Additionally, SLIIT will conduct soft skills workshops at the event, which is vital for success in the corporate world. Discussions and lectures on topics relevant to engineering will also be conducted during the exhibition.
Supporting budding engineers, the SLIIT Faculty of Engineering also organizes ‘Robofest’, an annual robotics competition for young engineers from schools and universities to showcase their innovation, passion for since, and robotics.
The SLIIT four-year BSc Engineering honors degree programme offers students the ability to select one of five major fields of study – Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering. The curriculum offers the appropriate technical knowledge, gain interdisciplinary problem-solving skills, and the confidence to become high-caliber engineers who can deal with real-world complex engineering problems and entrepreneurs necessary for the nation.
