In the face of global environmental challenges, organizations are embracing sustainable practices to protect our planet’s future. At the forefront of this transformative movement, SLASSCOM the leading IT/BPM industry association in Sri Lanka, has been championing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives that are revolutionizing the country’s technology sector.

SLASSCOM’s vision for a greener future is exemplified through various pioneering initiatives aimed at reducing the industry’s carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices within the IT/BPM sector. Through powerful awareness campaigns and enlightening workshops, SLASSCOM underscores the importance of responsible resource management and eco-conscious practices among its members. To further consolidate their efforts, SLASSCOM established an ESG Forum, serving as a collaborative platform to address crucial environmental and social issues.

Jehan Perinapanayagam, Chairman of SLASSCOM, along with key members of the SLASSCOM ESG Forum, shed light on the paramount importance of the “Zero Plastics” initiative.

Emaali Gunasekera, Head of Sustainability, Experienz, underscored the grave environmental impact of plastic materials derived from petrochemicals. As non-biodegradable substances, plastics significantly contribute to pollution and climate change, posing a severe threat to ecosystems. With improper disposal and inadequate recycling systems exacerbating the issue, plastic waste continues to accumulate in landfills and oceans, endangering wildlife and marine habitats. Moreover, the disintegration of plastic debris into microplastics poses risks to human health through the food chain. Emaali also shared a stark concern about the future state of the oceans, where plastic waste continues to accumulate at an alarming rate.

To combat plastic pollution and promote the “Zero Plastics” concept, Jehan urged businesses to reduce their plastic footprint. Going beyond conventional practices is crucial for protecting ecosystems from the harmful effects of plastic waste and enhancing a company’s brand reputation as a responsible environmental steward. This collective movement among businesses marks a significant step towards a greener and cleaner future for our planet.

SLASSCOM ESG Forum Head, Denver De Zylva, Global Head of Facilities & Sustainability of Virtusa highlighted the transformative journey towards “Zero Plastics,” requiring a paradigm shift in consumer behavior and industry practices. Embracing sustainable alternatives, such as reusable bags, bottles, and packaging, holds the key to success. Industries must proactively redesign products and packaging to be biodegradable or easily recyclable, embracing recyclable plastics as a promising solution to combat plastic pollution and environmental degradation.

Recognizing the role of governments in driving change, Jehan noted that decisive actions, such as bans or fees on single-use plastics are needed. Exploring innovative alternatives like biodegradable and compostable materials is also essential in promoting a “Zero Plastics” society.

To measure progress in reducing plastic waste and advancing towards “Zero Plastics,” SLASSCOM believes in tracking metrics like the amount of plastic waste generated, the percentage of recycled plastics and the adoption of plastic alternatives. Lifecycle assessments provide valuable insights for organizations to quantify their plastic footprint, while individuals can monitor their plastic consumption and waste generation, through metrics like “plastic-free days.”

Looking to the future, Jehan expressed optimism about advancements in biodegradable and compostable materials, increased focus on plastic waste reduction in supply chains, and the rise of circular economy practices. Collaborative efforts between governments, businesses, and civil society will be instrumental in driving lasting change and laying the foundation for a sustainable and plastic-free future.

SLASSCOM’s commitment to Zero-plastic policies and their advocacy, serves as a powerful call to action, uniting their member organizations to pursue a plastic-free future as their leadership sets the benchmark to pave the way for a greener tomorrow.
