In a significant step to align academia with the rapidly evolving IT sector, the Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM) has launched an immersive programme to provide university academics in Sri Lanka with hands-on exposure to corporate environments.
The initiative targets educators involved in degree programmes such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, and other IT-related disciplines, aiming to foster stronger links between academic institutions and industry demands.
The programme is designed to equip academics with up-to-date knowledge of IT trends, technologies, and industry expectations. Participants will gain practical experience through project-based learning, an understanding of career pathways, and insights into corporate culture.
The initiative also encourages academics to undertake case studies, author white papers, and conduct knowledge-sharing sessions to bridge the gap between education and industry. Ultimately, the program aspires to empower academics to adapt their teaching methods, ensuring graduates are better prepared to meet industry needs.
Programme Overview :The programme is structured into three core components:
- Foundational Knowledge: Industry fundamentals and key trends.
- Standard Practical Sessions: Real-world IT practices and workflows.
- Specialized Practical Sessions: Collaborative, team-based projects.
Spanning nine days, this immersive experience offers academics a firsthand understanding of the technical and professional skills expected of IT graduates entering the workforce.
Strengthening academia-industry collaboration :In today’s rapidly changing job market, collaboration between academia and the IT sector is essential. By engaging directly with industry leaders, academics can better prepare the next generation of talent. This partnership bridges the gap between theoretical education and the practical skills required in the workforce, producing graduates who are more equipped to meet modern workplace demands.
The hands-on exposure academics gain through this program enables them to bring current industry knowledge and insights into the classroom. This approach fosters a dynamic learning environment where students benefit from both practical experience and theoretical concepts, addressing the critical skills gap faced by many industries today.
Pilot programme and future plans: The pilot phase includes collaborations with institutions such as the University of Moratuwa (IT Department), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT). Leading IT companies Wiley, Virtusa, and hSenid will host the first batch of academics, with IFS and LSEG set to host the second group. These companies offer valuable insights into corporate culture, industry standards, and emerging trends.
Developed by SLASSCOM’s Capacity and HR Forums and supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, this initiative is set to expand to other state and non-state universities across Sri Lanka. The program aims to create a sustainable impact by continuously improving academic delivery and better preparing graduates for careers in the IT industry.
