“The global career market has experienced a paradigm shift, where companies and organizations are now looking for unique skills among their recruits as much as they look for paper qualifications. The world has also shifted focus from the more traditional career options to open avenues for exciting new skills-based roles. Recognizing this new demand, Skills Expo 2024 is set to redefine the landscape of skills, education, and career exploration across Asia. We are indeed privileged to be able to have led the way by the Ministry of Education as the premier skills-based expo in the country”, said Chairman of Skills Expo Ravith Silva at the launch event.

Scheduled for the 10th, 11th, and 12th of September 2024 at the prestigious venues of Nelum Pokuna and Green Path, this year’s expo proudly carries the theme “Unlock Your Future.” “This event is basically designed to showcase career and job opportunities for students nationwide”, said Chairman of the Tourism Industry Sector Council Sanath Ukwatta at the launch event.

The 2023 version of the expo that was held at BMICH saw thousands in attendance. Many of them travelled from across the nation to receive guidance and direction on the proper career path to embark on using the skills that they already possessed. More than 3000 students were provided transport to visit the expo last year, and discussions are underway with the Ministry of Transport to provide the same facility this year as well.

This year a host of institutions are set to have their stalls at the expo to help the youth navigate through the task of finding the right fit for them. The Construction Industry Skills Council (CISC), Information and Communication Technology Industry Skills Council (ICTISC), Manufacturing and Engineering Industry Sector Skills Council (MESSCO), Tourism Industry Skills Council (TISC), and Agriculture Sector Skills Council (ASSC) will educate the public on the industrial training programs available, share data related to available job vacancies within these sectors, and provide opportunities for job seekers to apply. Career keys and other professional insights, personalized career counseling, and guidance will also be provided to ensure visitors find suitable employment.

Furthermore, this year’s expo will redefine how exhibitions are done in Sri Lanka with the use of technology at the forefront whilst expanding the size by 300% to provide space for higher education private universities with globally renowned university affiliations, leading vocational and technical institutions whose students are sought after globally, and pavilions from foreign missions that promote education opportunities in other countries for those who are looking for offshore education.

Additionally, foreign employment agencies as well as local industries, organizations, and companies will also be at the event to attract future workforce and provide guidance to the future workforce on what requirements are looked at for successful career progression. To top it all off, around 40-50 career guidance officers and counselors will be on call for the duration of the three days to guide all participants regardless of them being school students or prospective employees.

At the launch event, visionaries from various industries will share their insights into their specific areas of expertise and offer students and the general public, a panoramic view of educational opportunities, career pathways, and the latest in skills development. International and local employment prospects will be discussed at various symposiums, providing exclusive insights, networking opportunities, and thought-provoking discussions. Attendees will also have the privilege to engage in illuminating interviews and capture the vibrant essence of Skills Expo 2024 first-hand.
