Colombo, Sri Lanka – March 14, 2025 – The Shiranee Joseph De Saram Foundation (SJDSF) proudly joins the global community in observing World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, 2025. This annual event raises awareness and advocates for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome worldwide.
Established in 2006, World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on March 21—the 21st day of the third month—to signify the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2012, emphasizing the importance of promoting the inherent rights and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome.
Founded in 1993 by Sri Lanka’s first Speech and Language Therapist, Shiranee Joseph de Saram, SJDSF has been dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual and communication disabilities. The foundation provides education, skills, and knowledge to empower these individuals, fostering their independence and societal inclusion.
One of the key initiatives and services provided by the Foundation is to improve the employability of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Their intensive program is aimed at facilitating specific, targeted enhancement of communication skills, fostering greater independence and social integration. By equipping individuals with practical skills, facilitating employment opportunities, promoting financial independence and societal contribution the SJDSF aims to support young people with intellectual disabilities gain a sense of self worth and agency. This support also ties in with offering much needed guidance to families and empowering them to advocate effectively for their loved ones
In its pursuit of empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities, SJDSF established “Thrive,” a sheltered workshop and brand that offers vocational training and employment opportunities. Participants engage in creating various products, including ornaments, jewellery, and table linens, which are sold to support the foundation’s initiatives and provide income for the artisans.
SJDSF actively engages in advocacy efforts to challenge societal misconceptions and promote inclusivity. Through workshops, community events, and media campaigns, the foundation strives to create a society where individuals with Down syndrome are valued and empowered. In alignment with the spirit of World Down Syndrome Day, the foundation would like to highlight its trainees with Down Syndrome who can be considered fantastic role models. Varsha is a beautiful young woman who has an amazing sense of colour and creativity working at the Thrive workshop. She is also an aspiring model and has been part of several progressive modelling campaigns that have included people with diverse looks and body types.
Udara despite her limited fine motor skills is a key player in manufacturing beautifully crafted tie dye products, highlighting the fact that adaptations in the work environment can facilitate individuals to make meaningful contributions irrespective of their difficulties.
SJDSF’s commitment to supported employment has also led to successful collaborations with corporate partners.
On this World Down Syndrome Day, the Foundation, which is now run by Shiranee’s daughter Praveena Joseph De Saram, invites individuals, organizations, and policymakers to join in celebrating the lives and achievements of those with Down syndrome. By working together, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
