Seylan Bank’s Table Tennis Team Shines at the 70th Open Mercantile Table Tennis Championship

Seylan Bank recently excelled at the 70th Open Mercantile Table Tennis Championship, held at the S. Thomas’ Indoor Stadium, Mount Lavinia. Led by Chalitha Ranjana, Seylan Bank’s table tennis team delivered an outstanding performance. Chalitha secured the Open Men’s Singles title, achieving his 10th Mercantile Men’s championship victory. He also triumphed in the Masters Singles and Open Men’s Doubles events. Chalitha Ranjana displayed exceptional skill and focus as he faced two of the country’s top paddlers – Prasad de Silva, a national-ranking player from Emjay International, and Supuna Warusawithana, the current National Champion. His remarkable athletic ability and experience enabled him to secure victories of 3-1 against both opponents in highly competitive matches that highlighted tactical prowess and agility.
 



 

A proud alumnus of Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda, Chalitha Ranjana’s career as a sportsman is celebrated both locally and internationally. He has won the Mercantile Singles title ten times and has consistently reached the finals of the Mercantile Team Event ‘A’ Division for the past 20 years, either as a winner or runner-up.

His international achievements include recognition at the Commonwealth Championship in 2004, where he won a bronze medal, the highest achievement set by a Sri Lankan paddler, and the South Asian Games in 1999, 2003, and 2010. Additionally, he impressed audiences at the New Zealand Open in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Chalitha was honoured as the Best Table Tennis Player at the Mercantile Games in 2019, as well as at the National Sports Games in 2007 and 2008. Chalitha has proudly secured the National Championship title four times. Additionally, he held the prestigious title of Sri Lanka’s No. 1 National Table Tennis Champion from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2008 to 2010. Chalitha and his team showcased remarkable skill and coordination in the tournament’s ‘A’ Division, rising to the challenge with an inspiring performance. Meanwhile, Sashika Wijesooriya stood out in the Masters Singles category, advancing to the quarter-finals. Additionally, Shanoli Liyanage secured impressive finishes in the Open Women’s Singles and Open Mixed Doubles categories, reaching the quarter-finals in both events.
