The unveiling of Scope Cinemas’ latest venue – Scope Cinemas Multiplex at Havelock City Mall – marks a significant milestone for entertainment in Sri Lanka. As the largest and most advanced multiplex in the country, it sets a new benchmark for cinematic experiences, offering 6 state-of-the-art theatres, including Sri Lanka’s first IMAX® with Laser. The project embodies Scope Cinemas’ unwavering commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, supported by Liberty Lands & Developments (Private) Limited, its parent company and main investor, in bringing this vision to life.

Scope Cinemas, despite being a relatively young company with just seven years in the industry, has rapidly ascended to the forefront of Sri Lanka’s cinema scene. Known for its cutting-edge facilities and dedication to providing immersive and holistic cinema experiences, Scope Cinemas has become a household name, synonymous with excellence. Its new Multiplex at Havelock City is a continuation of this legacy, offering moviegoers a unique blend of advanced technology, comfort, and luxury. Scope Cinema’s achievements have also earned it several accolades including the Gold Award for Innovative Brand of the Year and being ranked amongst LMD’s Most Respected Entities in 2024, marking the 1st time in Sri Lanka that a cinema chain has achieved such recognition.

Chassy Cortes – Head of Marketing and PR at Scope Cinemas explains, “From the very beginning, our mission with Scope Cinemas has been to revolutionise and set the standard for the local cinema industry in Sri Lanka. We wanted to bring the world to Sri Lanka, offering the same experiences that audiences in other countries enjoy. With our new multiplex, we aimed for a world-class design and equipped it with the latest cinema technology, including IMAX® with Laser, ensuring that all our screens are the most advanced in the country. But our vision extends beyond technology; we also focused on providing the best food, beverages, and unique experiences that no other cinema can offer. As a result, we’ve made world-class cinema experiences not just an aspiration, but a reality, and Scope Cinemas is proud to have made that happen.”

The new Scope Cinemas Multiplex at Havelock City Mall is designed with both aesthetics and functionality in mind. It features a grand lobby with huge versatile LED displays, offering ample advertising opportunities and setting the stage for a premium cinema experience from the moment patrons enter. The layout has been ingeniously designed to enhance the flow of foot traffic, reduce queues, and streamline operations, ensuring that every visit is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Self-service kiosks add to the convenience, allowing customers to purchase or collect tickets effortlessly.

Discussing the unique aspects of the new multiplex, Naveed Cader – Executive Chairman at Scope Cinemas said, “We’ve taken a lot of lessons from our past experiences and applied them here to create a space that truly transforms the moviegoing experience. From the moment you enter, every detail has been considered to enhance both customer convenience and operational efficiency. We’ve invested in the best technology available, from 4K laser projection to Harkness screens, to ensure that every film is presented in the highest possible quality. And of course, our IMAX® theatre is a standout feature, but the other five screens, including a Dolby Atmos cinema, are equally impressive. We’ve also focused heavily on our food and beverage offerings, redefining what cinema dining can be. For us, cinema is more than just about movies; it’s about enjoying a complete, world-class entertainment experience that genuinely transports you into an alternate reality.”

The amazing Scope Cinema’s experience is further augmented by its user-friendly and reliable online booking system, which was introduced in 2017 and has revolutionised the way Sri Lankans book movie tickets, by eliminating long queues, and offering the convenience of selecting seats and ordering food and beverages online. The Scope Cinemas mobile app adds a further layer of seamlessness to this experience, including tap-to-order features for food and beverage, complemented by its Scope Privilege loyalty programme.

Mr Naveed Cader also took a moment to appreciate the visionary support of Mr Imthiaz Cader – Managing Director of Liberty Lands and Development – the largest investor behind Scope Cinemas, “The support of Liberty Lands & Developments, and Mr Imthiaz Cader, as an investor, visionary guide, and father, has been pivotal in bringing the Scope Cinemas dream into its present reality, particularly with the new industry benchmark that we have achieved in the form of Scope Cinemas Multiplex at Havelock City.”

Liberty Lands and Development is a diversified conglomerate in Sri Lanka. Its investment in Scope Cinemas is a continuation of its longstanding commitment to providing quality entertainment to Sri Lankans, which began with the old Liberty Cinema in Colpetty. The company holds strategic investments in a diverse portfolio of subsidiaries including, Alhambra Hotels Limited, which owns and operates the Ramada by Wyndham, Scope Cinemas (Private) Limited, Cine Digital (Private) Limited – specialists in equipping cinemas with state-of-the-art digital and sound systems, and Food Studio (Private) Limited – which manages food courts across prime locations like Colombo City Centre, One Galle Face, and Havelock City Mall, with plans to expand into the Departure Lounge of the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Expressing his support for the vision of Scope Cinemas, Mr Imthiaz Cader said, “Liberty Lands and Development has always believed in the power of cinema to bring people together and create lasting memories. Our investment in Scope Cinemas is a continuation of our legacy in the cinema industry, but led by youthful visionaries who resonate well with emerging generations. We are very proud to have supported the development of the Havelock City Multiplex, which we believe will become a landmark destination for movie lovers in Sri Lanka – and perhaps even the region. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the collective effort, vision, and partnership of both Liberty Lands and Scope Cinemas.”

As Scope Cinemas continues to set new standards in the industry, its Multiplex at Havelock City stands as an embodiment of the company’s dedication to innovation and excellence. With plans for further expansion both within Sri Lanka and internationally, Scope Cinemas is poised to lead the way in redefining what it means to go to the movies in the 21st century.
