Scanwell Logistics Colombo recently partnered with the Sri Lanka  Sub-Aqua Club, (SLSAC ) the Oldest & The only SCUBA Diving club in Sri Lanka to launch a value driven ocean cleanup initiative, with a particular focus on minimizing pollution and protecting Sri Lanka’s waters and marine ecosystems.

The collaboration will begin with an ambitious mission to clear debris near the wreck site of the “SS British Sergeant” a World War II oil tanker sunk in 1942, one of Sri Lanka’s most important historical shipwrecks that also supports a vibrant marine life. Today, the wreck has become a focal point for debris buildup, where pollution has steadily worsened, taking a toll on marine habitats. Among the most severe challenges is plastic pollution, wreaking havoc on marine ecosystems. By launching this project, Scanwell seeks to actively contribute to reducing pollution and promoting sustainability. This project also aligns with Environmental Awareness Month in September, reinforcing Scanwell Logistics dedication to environmental stewardship. Through this initiative, the company hopes to set an example for other businesses and encourage more organizations to take part in similar efforts to safeguard the environment.

The cleanup project will involve experienced divers from the Sri Lanka Sub-Aqua Club, who will work to clear debris from the area, removing plastics, fishing nets, and other waste materials that have accumulated over time, affecting the wreck and surrounding waters. This debris not only poses dangers to marine life but also threatens the ecological balance of the area. The long-term goal of the project is to create a sustainable model for ocean conservation in Sri Lanka.

This cleanup of the British Sergeant wreck site is just the beginning. Scanwell Logistics Colombo’s plans to expand its efforts to other areas in Sri Lanka’s waters, contributing to a broader campaign to reduce ocean pollution. With the collaboration of local communities, environmental groups, and government agencies, the company hopes to play a key role in preserving the Island’s marine heritage for future generations.

Speaking of the ultimate goal and mission of the project , Mr. Priyan Seilman Executive Director of Scanwell Logsitics Colombo| Bangladesh stated ‘ As a company committed to sustainability and responsible business practices, we believe that preserving our oceans is not just an option, but a key and collective responsibility. This initiative is more than just a single project—it represents the beginning of our long-term commitment to reducing ocean pollution, protecting marine ecosystems, and ensuring the livelihoods of communities that depend on these waters.’

President of SLSAC Mr. Imran Yakoob added ‘ Our oceans are in critical need of attention, and partnerships like this one with Scanwell Logistics Colombo give us the opportunity to make a tangible impact. The cleanup of the British Sergeant wreck site is a crucial step in reducing the pollution that threatens marine life and the livelihoods of those who rely on the ocean. Together, we are not only protecting the environment but also inspiring others to take action.”

Through this project , Scanwell Logistics Colombo and the Sub Aqua Club are not only addressing a localized issue but also contributing to global efforts to combat ocean degradation. The hope is that initiatives like this will spark larger movements, driving broader solutions to the critical challenges posed by ocean pollution.
