The ‘Kelani Saviya’ Alumni Association marked its first anniversary by undertaking a noteworthy corporate social responsibility (CSR) project recently, to upgrade the electrical wiring systems of several wards at the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital, the third largest hospital in Gampaha District.
The ‘Kelani Saviya’ Alumni Association is part of Sri Lanka’s number one brand in secure electrical and communication cables, Kelani Cables PLC’s award winning CSR programme ‘Kelani Saviya’ which enhances the skills of self-employed electrical technicians to professionals while also engages in grooming school leavers to be skilled electricians.
The project ensured that the electrical wiring system of Wards WD 10, 13 and 15 of the 110-year old Wathupitiwala Base Hospital, were replaced with the necessary upgraded electrical appliances. The project was successfully carried out under the able guidance of Mahinda Saranapala, Director/CEO and Dr. Anil Munasinghe General Manager, Marketing, Kelani Cables PLC.
Supporting the program were 25 members of the ‘Kelani Saviya’ Alumni Association who contributed their time and skills free of charge, in addition to nine (09) Grade 12 students of Zahira College, Maradana, who also participated in the event to gain on the job training of electrical wiring and installation. Supervising the students was Neil Ilukkumbura, Vice President, Alumni Association and School Sectional Head.
Established in 2007, in collaboration with the Engineering Faculty, Peradeniya University, ‘Kelani Saviya’ is the sole one-year electrical technicians training program in Sri Lanka that presents participants with a valuable University certificate on completion of the program. To-date over 500 students have participated in ‘Kelani Saviya’ program and most of them are now employed as skilled electricians, locally and overseas.
Participating in the Wathupitiwala CSR program were G.D. K. Samaranayake, President, Kelani Saviya Alumni Association, including Committee Members Mohamad Zakie, Nandana Udawata, Nishantha Premakumar, H. Jayasekara. Representing Kelani Cables were senior officials Dr. Anil Munasinghe, GM Marketing, Channa Jayasighe, Marketing Manager, Dharshana Gamlath, Field Sales Manager and Jayantha Wijesinghe, Kelani Saviya Program Coordinator.
