“Earth Is Calling, Are You Listening?” – Environmental Protection Awareness Program Parallel to Environment Week

In parallel to Environment Week, SLT-MOBITEL, the National ICT Solutions Provider, partnered with Lanka Nature Conservationists (LNC) recently to conduct an environmental awareness programme with sessions titled ‘Protection and Enrichment of the Last Remaining Sea Turtle Nesting Habitats in South Colombo Coastline’ and ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollutions in Colombo’.

SLT-MOBITEL has conducted similar programmes as an online programme over the past two years, building awareness on pressing environmental issues. This programme was held at the Navy Headquarters Auditorium, Colombo.

The programme addressed various topics related to coastal conservation and environmental issues. Anuruddha Suriyaarachchi, General Manager – Marketing Services of SLT and Mr. Samantha Gunasekara, President – LNC addressed the audience emphasising the importance of undertaking environmental initiatives.

An eminent panel also addressed the gathering on conservation and the promotion of sustainable initiatives. The speakers included W.A.N.S. Rajaratna, Director – Coastal Resource Management, Coast Conservation Department, who discussed Sri Lankan experiences relating to coastal conservation and environmental issues.

Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody, Senior Professor at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and Chair of the National Expert Committee on Mangrove Conservation and Sustainable Use, explored the meaningful restoration of coastal areas and the role of native plants. Professor Terney Pradeep Kumara from the University of Ruhuna discussed the issues of plastic pollution in coastal areas and the responsibility of the general public. Dr. Suhada Jayawardana, Senior Veterinary Doctor at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, shed light on common injuries faced by sea turtles and possible interventions. The programme concluded with a panel discussion and feedback activity, fostering an interactive exchange of ideas.

Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Pradeep Rathnayake, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, several officials from SLT-MOBITEL, LNC, Sri Lanka Navy, Department of Police and other government departments, including participants from the hotel sector, were present at the awareness programme.
