05th December 2023: Gaining meaningful industry exposure while pursuing a degree is a vital steppingstone for students to transit smoothly into their careers. Recognizing the need, through the Capstone Computing Project (CCP), Curtin University, guarantees that undergraduates receive substantive work exposure and develop the necessary competencies to explore into their selected careers.

CCP is undertaken by students as their final year project, presenting them the opportunity to execute software engineering projects in consultation with members of the academic staff, industry partners and designated clients.

With over 15 years leading Curtin University’s pioneering Capstone Project program, Dr. Hannes Herrmann, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, elaborates on the final year initiative for computing students to smoothly bridge the classroom and workplace. He provides insight how the Capstone Project offers unique industry-oriented experience to promote important professional skills and mindsets where graduates are empowered to seamlessly transition into the work environment with practical capabilities.

Q: Dr. Herrmann, can you elaborate on the Capstone Project at Curtin?

A: “The Capstone Project is meant to provide students the experience with industry tools that they are going to use, supporting them to begin their careers more easily. It is year-long industry-linked project that all final year students take up. It is meant to give them vital experience with the practical tools and scenarios they will encounter working in their fields after graduation.”

Q: How does this project facilitate industry exposure for students?

A: “There are a few pathways we facilitate. Some students directly apply for and are interviewed by companies who sponsor Capstone. Others are placed into industry projects in student groups. There are also those doing client-sponsored projects on campus under supervisor guidance. So various options promote direct industry learning.”

Q: What are some of the tangible benefits students gain via this industry orientation?

A: “By mirroring workplace realities – whether environments, tools, or deliverable expectations – students appreciate the practical application of their specialization. This further offers them first-hand experience in the workflow, problem-solving, communication and other integral soft skills crucial for the workplace – easing their transition from campus to career.”

Q: Why should prospective university students consider Curtin’s industry-linked Capstone offering?

A: “Being able to implement theoretical knowledge on actual industry projects before you graduate is a tremendous opportunity. Curtin’s Capstone develops well-rounded, work-ready graduates – providing them an extra edge to dive straight into the workforce. Thus, students who are skilled and keen to apply their learning will find Curtin’s committed industry orientation invaluable.”

Curtin’s Capstone Project is a dynamic career launchpad, empowering graduates with practical capabilities and a comprehensive understanding of industry demands, positioning them as valuable contributors in their chosen fields. The program’s tangible benefits include a deep understanding of specialization and a seamless transition into the workforce.
