The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Peradeniya to formalize collaborative efforts to improve financial literacy among undergraduates in Sri Lanka.
The collaboration proposes to promote capital market education among undergraduates by working together on a number of mutually beneficial strategic initiatives. Accordingly, the initiative would offer practical educational training and internship opportunities for students of the University of Peradeniya who are engaged in accountancy and finance, business management, and economics-related degree programmes with the CSE.
Further, under the terms of the MoU, the CSE will grant an award to the student who obtains the highest value in the Grade Point Average (“GPA”) in the Financial Management Specialization Programme of the University.
The University of Peradeniya will also collaborate with the ongoing educational initiatives of the CSE, Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets (ADFM) as well as in future educational activities, by providing the required expertise and resource persons to the seminars and workshops organized by the CSE to investors around the country in promoting the capital market investments.
Commenting on the partnership, the CEO of the CSE, Rajeeva Bandaranaike, stated, “It is crucial to promote financial literacy among Sri Lankans, especially among undergraduates, who are a key segment of the population equipped to contribute to an economically stable future. Fronted on this objective, we are pleased to partner the University of Peradeniya, in a productive line of initiatives to promote a financially literate undergraduate population for the sustainable growth of the economy in Sri Lanka.”
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Professor M.D. Lamawansa also sharing his views, mentioned that this educational focus of the Colombo Stock Exchange is really commendable. “It is essential if the university students could also gain industry knowledge, rather than only the theoretical knowledge and this initiative would definitely pave the way, to produce graduates with entrepreneurial and industrial skills.”
He also stated, “This sort of MoU signing with the industrial community is part of the university strategic plan and we are making every best effort to create skillful graduates from our university with industry exposure. Thus, this strategic alliance would also benefit our undergraduates; to be financially literate.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Management, University of Peradeniya, Professor Athula Ekanayake who was present at the occasion, also stated that, many undergraduates specializing in Accounting and Finance would be benefited significantly by the capital market related internship opportunities that will come through this collaboration.
