
Colombo, Sri Lanka – 14 March 2025 – Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka (CCBSL) celebrated International Women’s Day with a special program dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of waste resource collectors from the Colombo municipal area. Held at the J.R. Jayewardene Centre in Colombo, the event brought together 100 waste resource collectors to honor their critical role in community well-being, and urban cleanliness. Their contributions to the country’s recycling efforts were highlighted as key drivers for a more environmentally impactful future.
This event was organized with the support of Women in Management, an organization committed to empowering women through leadership, entrepreneurship, and advocacy.
The event was graced by Pathma Abeykoon, Additional Secretary – Ministry of Environment, as the Chief Guest. She applauded the efforts of the waste resource collectors and thanked them for their invaluable contributions to waste management, emphasizing their role in maintaining a cleaner environment and promoting public health. She also encouraged them to embrace becoming leaders in their careers and personal lives, highlighting the importance of empowerment, resilience, and continuous growth in building a more inclusive society.
The event featured a series of activities aimed at enhancing the health, well-being, and empowerment of these dedicated women. The day commenced with a warm welcome and an inspirational address by the Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Ltd, Pradip Pandey. Speaking at the event he appreciated the attendees’ resilience and dedication to their invaluable work.
The presence of special invitees from the U.S. Embassy, Daniel Jackson, Economic and Commercial Officer; and Thiloma Abayanayaka, Commercial and Economic Assistant, added meaningful value to the occasion, and further elevated the program.
A health camp was conducted providing participants with access to essential healthcare services. Many attendees benefited from the health screenings, which plays a crucial role in supporting their overall well-being. This was followed by a doctor-led session on women’s health and hygiene, featuring an engaging discussion where participants had the opportunity to consult medical professionals, address personal health concerns, and share experiences within their families. CCBSL appreciated the collaboration extended by Hemas Hospitals in conducting the health camp.
These unsung heroes were celebrated with a gift pack to appreciate their hard work, which included essential dry rations, healthcare, and hygiene items—recognizing their contributions to both environmental and social sustainability.
