In celebration of World Environment Day 2018,and in keeping with this year’s theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution”, Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) recently hosted a series of educational activities for its employees in order to promote sustainability throughout the organization. The activities were conducted from 5th – 8th June.
Apart from tree planting activities, which were organized in many of the tobacco leaf growing areas; an educational campaign was also conducted internally to raise awareness on how to reduce single-use plastics and how to be more conscious of reusing plastics in employees’ day-to-day lives.
Informative newsletters and videos on reducing plastic use were circulated among employees via email and several interactive games and quizzes were organized throughout the week to educate employees on the subject.
In addition, employees came together to brainstorm ideas on how to further eliminate plastic usage at the workplace. CTC will implement some of the best ideas submitted in line with their target of reducing general garbage to landfill by 1%.
Dimuthu Tharanga, Environmental and Health Safety Manager at CTC said, “As a responsible organization we value sustainability and care about protecting our environment. Every year we aim to further strengthen our employees’commitment towards protecting our planet by establishing positive behavioral change through education and action at both organizational and individual levels.”
As a responsible organization, CTC understands that it has an added responsibility towards the environment and take pride in the sustainable and responsible way their operations are run. CTC will continue to foster environmental sustainability across its value chain.
