C.W. Mackie PLC expands environmental efforts with ‘Beach Cleaning Day’

As part of the “Marine Pollution Prevention” component of its Sixfold Sustainable Model, C.W. Mackie PLC recently organised “Beach Cleaning Day” in an effort to band together environmentalists and the staff of C.W. Mackie PLC towards achieving a shared goal.

Starting bright and early at Mount Lavinia, “Beach Cleaning Day” was a joint effort carried out in collaboration with environmental organisations Clean Ocean Force and Wana Arana as well as the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), and Sri Lanka Police.

Commenting on the success of the event, C.W. Mackie PLC Chairman Mr. Hemaka Amarasuriya noted: “Sri Lanka is a country blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches and seas and other wonders of nature. As times progress, we hear more about pollution and climate change. Corporates cannot and should not turn a deaf ear. We at C.W. Mackie PLC have realised the importance of taking leadership to preserve the environment, and we are committed to continue these efforts in the many years to come.”

In the last few years alone, Sri Lanka has faced multiple incidents of marine and beach pollution, putting both marine and human life at grave risk. This has resulted in the importance of corporations collaborating with governmental and non-governmental organisations for long-term marine conservation initiatives increasing rapidly.

Sharing his thoughts, C.W. Mackie PLC Group of Companies Executive Director Mr. Mangala Perera stated: “We are pleased and humbled to see so many people come together in one aspiration. As a company that is deeply committed to its environmental policy, C.W. Mackie PLC strives to make a difference that goes beyond the traditional idea of success. Through our Sixfold Sustainable Model, we hope to keep expanding our efforts, both in quality and quantity, and give an opportunity for people to contribute towards environmental conservation and sustenance.”

With this call for action in mind, C.W. Mackie PLC Group of Companies – a diversified conglomerate engaged in areas such as exports and imports, manufacture, marketing, and distribution of leading brands across the country – embarked on a new, holistic approach to seek solutions. The Sixfold Sustainable Model covers key areas of PET Collection and Recycling, Conserving Water, Glass Water Bottle Project, ISO 14001:2015 Certified Plant, Green Reporting, and Marine Pollution Prevention.

Earlier this year, the company launched the “Recycle for Future Generation” EPR initiative, under the Sixfold Sustainable Model, focusing on collecting and recycling empty PET bottles in partnership with Eco Spindles (Pvt) Ltd., a pioneer in plastic recycling in Sri Lanka.

The company also voluntarily engaged in Green Reporting and registered for the National Green Reporting System with the Ministry of Environment to communicate information on their sustainability initiatives and performances.
