The British Council Sri Lanka hosted an awards ceremony recently, to recognise the top Cambridge Assessment English registration centers for their valuable contribution.
The event was organised to appreciate and recognise the British Council’s Cambridge centers for the many years of service and significant contribution towards exam registrations and support extended to grow the business through value addition. The ceremony also felicitated examiners who work tirelessly to ensure high quality performances of the centers.
In appreciation of their exclusivity and outstanding performance, several registration centers received special accolades. ESOL College, Maharagama was awarded the Platinum Award, the Institute of British Examinations, Negombo received the Gold award, Britannia Education Services & Tuition, Kotikawatte received the Silver award and the Bronze award was presented to Headway School of Languages, Batticaloa.
Commenting on receiving the Platinum award, Himantha Karunanarathne, CEO, ESOL College International said, “It gives me a great pleasure in acknowledging the platinum award presented to ESOL College International in recognition of the performance as a British Council registration center for Cambridge Assessment English for year 2019. Since our inception in 2006, ESOL College has had firm affiliation with British Council benefitting the development of each student. Among our core values is student empowerment through education and we are delighted to be recognised for the quality of the service we provide for over 5000 students,”
A highlight of the ceremony was awarding the Top 50 volume contributing centers with a brand association plaque. The event also acknowledged the support of 25 Cambridge Assessment English teachers who work as speaking examiners.
Additionally, the highest volumes contributor for each province as well as contributor for the Maldives were recognised. A total of 10 regional awards were presented to these winners.

During the event, U.H Jayobandara from the BASE Institute of British Examinations Maharagama was felicitated with a Lifetime achievement award for his unwavering support and dedication to the British Council as a registration center.
Ashoka College Horana received the ‘Rising Star’ award in appreciation of the phenomenal growth in Cambridge Assessment English registrations recorded for British Council Sri Lanka for the year 2019.
Gill Caldicott, Country Director British Council, Rob Low, Country Examinations Director and Kevin Coyne, Key Account Manager South Asia, Cambridge Assessment English were the distinguished invitees. Over 100 participants from across the country and the Maldives attended the event.
The British Council has a long and proud history of delivering Cambridge English exams across the world, helping to maintain the reputation and recognition of these qualifications. In Sri Lanka, the British Council has been working closely with Cambridge Assessment English for over 30 years ensuring secure, fair and reliable delivery of exams.
“British Council recorded its highest Cambridge Assessment English exam volumes in the current financial year 2019-2020. This was possible due to the significant volume contributed by a majority of the registration centers. We will continue to support our registration centers to grow their business enabling the British Council to impact the lives of many students who aspire to obtain a UK qualification. Through the registration centers we have also reached out to candidates islandwide from the North to the South and East to West” said Nishani Perera, Account Relationship & Business Development Manager for Cambridge Assessment English.
British Council is the first Cambridge Assessment English Authorised center in Sri Lanka. To-date over 250 registration centers in Sri Lanka and Maldives prepare candidates for Cambridge Assessment English exams. Partners are spread across the nine provinces in Sri Lanka and in five atolls in the Maldives
While opening an opportunity for students in Sri Lanka to obtain a recognised UK qualification, the British Council continues to focus on supporting its registration partners through teacher training workshops and qualification awareness sessions.
Furthering this goal, the British Council in collaboration with Cambridge conducted five product specific workshops for registration centers. Additionally, ten awareness sessions for parents/ potential customers were conducted in locations such as Jaffna, Piliyandala, Ja- Ela, Batticaloa, Kurunegala, Kotikawatte, Anuradhapura, Minuwangoda, Polonnaruwa, and Kelaniya.
The British Council also offered ten free Teacher training sessions for the Top 10 registration centers during the year. Extending its services, the British Council also supported new centres by conducting teacher training sessions for the staff of these respective institutes.
