Life during the pandemic has been difficult for parents and children alike. The return to school is an important and welcome step, but it is important that children return to a safe and hygienic space to resume their learning.
To provide a safe re-start to the schoolchildren of Biyagama, the team behind Anchor, the flagship dairy brand of Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka, recently organised a shramadana clean-up and awareness programme at the grounds and classrooms of the Biyagama Central College and Biyagama Primary School.
Speaking on the initiative, the Principal of Biyagama Central College, Mr. U V Gunarathne said, “While the pandemic has been a never-before experienced challenge to us all, we should also remind ourselves of other risks due to the overgrown vegetation such as mosquito breeding – and we must take necessary steps to eliminate this risk.”
“I would like to thank the parents, teachers and the Anchor team for coming together in an effort to make this environment safe and hygienic for the over 2,000 children of our school and for following the guidelines of the local health authorities.”
Anchor sponsored a tractor and grass cutters for the day to maintain the gardens and grounds of both schools. A disinfection machine was used to sanitise the premises and a donation of surgical masks and hand sanitiser was made to be used by the schoolchildren upon coming back to school.
Fonterra Brands Lanka health and safety experts also kicked off a week-long series of safety briefing sessions to the schoolchildren, who return in rosters from Monday the 10th.
