The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) last week paid tribute to three distinguished Chartered Accountants by inducting them to the Hall of Fame for the year 2022 in recognition of their exemplary contribution towards the development of the accounting profession, business world and country.
Fellow members of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Ranjan Emmanuel Victor Casie Chetty, Ms. Marina Anneliese Tharmaratnam, and Mr. Dominic Lawrence Joseph Seneviratne, were inducted to the Hall of Fame at a special event held at the Monarch Imperial, in the presence of Hon. Yasantha Kodagoda, PC, Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. Sanjaya Bandara, President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Heshana Kuruppu, Vice President of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Mohan Abeynaike, Past President of CA Sri Lanka, and Ms. Dulani Fernando, Chief Executive Officer of CA Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ranjan Casie Chetty is a highly respected accounting professional who played a significant role in developing the accounting profession while giving leadership to some of the country’s top conglomerates, during a career spanning over 40 years. He was a Director at Aitken Spence Group Ltd., as well as at Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC., and is also the former Chairman of the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association. His service to the professional community was beyond exceptional, having served on various committees of professional institutes and chambers of commerce. Mr. Casie Chetty also served as a member of the Advisory Commission constituted under Companies Act No. 17 of 1982, and at CA Sri Lanka, he served on the Research & Development Committee, Accounting Systems & Standards Committee, Auditing Procedures & Standards Committee, and the Examination Committee.
A highly respected accounting professional in the country, Ms. Marina Anneliese Tharmaratnam, played an influential role across the banking and insurance sectors. At present, she is an Independent/Non-Executive Director at HNB General Insurance Limited, and in the past, she held the positions of CEO/Director of Union Assurance PLC, as well as former Executive Vice President of Operations at DFCC Vardhana Bank PLC, and former Finance Director/Company Secretary at Eagle Insurance. Ms. Tharmaratnam has also held board positions at DFCC Vardhana Bank PLC, United Tractor & Equipment Limited, Eagle Insurance Company Limited, Eagle NDB Fund Management Co. Ltd., Union Assurance PLC, and Singer Finance PLC. She was the Chairperson of World Vision Lanka, apart from serving as President of the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors and a Member of the National Council for Economic Development (NCED) for Capital Markets from 2004 to 2007. At CA Sri Lanka, she served on various committees, including as a member of the Ethics Committee from 2007 to 2015.
During a career spanning many decades, Mr. Dominic Lawrence Joseph Seneviratne served top corporates in Sri Lanka, including Shaw Wallace & Hedges Limited, Ceylon Tobacco Limited, Hentley Garments Limited, Janatha Estate Development Board, and Tristar Apparels Limited. His exceptional performance also earned him an Executive Consultant position at the Asian Development Bank and a World Bank-funded accounting development project at the National Water Supply & Drainage Board. In 1994, he was offered the post of Director of Practical Training at CA Sri Lanka, where he took steps to increase the number of approved training institutions while ensuring regular inspections of the training firms, leading to higher standards of training for aspiring Chartered Accountants. Mr. Seneviratne made vast contributions towards enhancing professional standards and also served the Council of CA Sri Lanka in 1984 and 1985, apart from chairing the Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Committee.
CA Sri Lanka launched the ‘Hall of Fame’ initiative in 2011 to recognise senior Chartered Accountants who made an outstanding contribution towards the development of the institute, the profession, society and country.
