People’s Leasing contributes to the improvement of Waste Management at Polonnaruwa Gal Viharaya Premises

 



 

 

 

People’s Leasing and Finance PLC drives its Corporate Social Responsibilities under three focus areas as Education Upliftment, Environment Conservation and Empowerment of Local Communities. As an Environmental Conservation responsibility initiative, People’s Leasing contributed to the installation of waste segregation bins in Polonnaruwa Gal Viharaya based on a need identified in collaboration with Central Cultural Fund and Department of Archeology under the guidance of Chief Incumbent of Polonnaruwa Gal Viharaya. The project was initiated in accordance with a concept by Mr. Shamindra Marcelline – Chief Executive Officer/General Manager of People’s Leasing Company. The main objective of this initiative is to streamline the waste management process and assisting in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The installed waste bins were handed over to Kanda Ketiya Aththadassi – Thero Solosmasthana Bhaarakara, by Mr.Susil Priyantha, Assistant Regional Manager, People’s Leasing and Finance PLC in order to hand over to the general public recently. Mr. Hishan Welmilla, Manager – Marketing, Communication and Sustainability of People’s Leasing, Mr. Nalaka Suresh – Branch Manager, Mr. Chammika Jayamantha – Second officer of People’s Leasing Polonnaruwa Branch, Mr.Thissa Bandara – Chief Supervisor, Central Cultural Fund, Polonnaruwa, Mr. Malinda Nishan – Regional Officer-Department of Archeology, and Mr.Chudath Balachandra – Public Health Inspector in Polonnaruwa area were also presented at this event. Solid Waste Segregation is an important part of the waste management chain and it facilitates easy ways to reduce, re-use and recycle as well as proper management of the solid waste. Through the development of this 3R methodology, it provides a beneficial effect on the conservation of the environment and to the well-being of  human beings. The Polonnaruwa Gal Viharaya has originally named as Uttararama, which is a rock temple of the Buddha situated in Polonnaruwa. The central feature of the temple is four rock relief statues of the Buddha which have been carved into the face of a large granitic rock. The statues consist of a large seated figure, another smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure and a reclining figure. These are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts. The Gal Viharaya is an ancient sacred place which has attraction of local and foreign visitors.
