Hemas Hospitals, the first and only hospital chain in Sri Lanka to have been accredited from the Australian Council on Health Standards (ACHSI), today opened the doors to an expansive state-of-the-art Fertility Centre offering a range of fertility services in addition to screenings and diagnostic services.

Equipped with the latest machinery and facilities available in the global market, the Centre answers to a growing demand for fertility services in a country facing a declining population since the 1960’s. Additionally, Sri Lanka has witnessed an increase in infertility rates which grew from 3 percent in 2006-7 report by the Census Department to 5 percent as observed in the most recent 2016 census.

“Given that Sri Lanka has the lowest Total Fertility Rate (TRF) of 2.2 when compared to its regional peers such as India and Cambodia which have a TFR of 2.6 and Pakistan of 3.8 (the highest in the region), we have witnessed a steady growth in the demand for fertility procedures over the years. Changing lifestyle choices which have led to an increasing number of women and men choosing to bear children at a later stage has compounded the need for fertility services.

“We at Hemas Hospitals are therefore committed to offering the expertise of a well-trained panel of doctors backed by state-of-the-art medical care facilities to future parents,” Hemas Hospitals Managing Director Dr. Lakith Peiris said.

Parents-to-be will be guided through a comprehensive medical examination, including 4-D ultrasound scans, laparoscopy and sperm analysis to determine the cause of infertility and optimum health conditions needed to carry out a pregnancy. A clear plan of action will be formulated for the couple thereafter to help them conceive.

“By bringing together an expert panel of surgeons and experienced medical officers we hope to provide quality fertility services and solutions. Our holistic and comprehensive range of services in the capable hands of some of the most experienced health care providers will assist couples achieve their dream of starting a family of their own,” Dr. Lasantha Karunasekara ,Director and General Manager of Hemas Hospital Wattala said.

Additionally, a range of treatments from simple procedures to trigger release of eggs/IUI, to advanced treatments such as IVF, sperm and egg donation, and testicular biopsy are available at the Hemas Hospitals Fertility Centre Wattala. Special tests and treatment for recurrent implantation failure are also available.

Equipped with the most advanced infrastructure and supported by the highly specialized facilities at Hemas Hospitals Wattala, the centre will offer a complete range of fertility procedures.

The Hospital Management team, Hemas Hospitals Chairman Mr. Murtaza Esufally, Managing Director Dr. Lakith Peiris, Hemas Hospitals Consultants, Nurses and Doctors from the MOH office and other health services officials were present at the ceremony held at the Hemas Hospital premises in Wattala.

First established in 2008 with the launch of its pioneering facility in Wattala, and followed by a second facility in Thalawathugoda, Hemas Hospitals is one of the most advanced hospital chains in Sri Lanka and is currently aiming to further expand its operations into super-speciality medical and healthcare, through the addition of further state-of-the-art facilities aimed at providing an international standard of healthcare at an affordable rate for all Sri Lankans. The organisation employs over 300 consultants covering a wide range of specialities and its 24-hour Accident and Emergency Unit is equipped to handle any medical or surgical emergency.
