McLarens Maritime Academy celebrates success of future seafarers at Convocation 2024

McLarens Maritime Academy (MMA), a leading institution in Sri Lanka’s maritime training sector, proudly hosted its Convocation 2024 at Jasmine Hall, BMICH. The event marked the successful completion of training for the Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program – Phase I – Batch 1 and Pre-Sea Training Course Deck Rating Batch 5, with graduates now ready to embark on their careers in the global maritime industry. Notably, for the first time in the academy’s history, four lady deck rating trainees successfully completed their program, marking a significant milestone in MMA’s commitment to fostering diversity in the maritime sector. These pioneering graduates are now prepared to navigate promising careers in the industry. 



 

The prestigious ceremony was graced by Captain Nirmal Silva, Harbor Master of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, as the Chief Guest. Mr. Asanka Deshapriya, Director General of Merchant Shipping Secretary, Ms. Shehara De Silva, Group Managing Director of McLarens Group, and Captain Roshan Perera representing Monaco Marine Pvt. Ltd attended as the VVIP Guests, alongside several distinguished industry leaders, including McLarens Group CEO Mr. Oshan Fernando, Group CCO Dr. Ravi Edirisinghe, Group Directors Mr. Shanil Perera, Mr. Chandana Wijesundara, Admiral Jayantha Perera, Mr. Ashan Welagedara, Captain Athula Hewawitharana, Captain Keith Jayasuriya, Mr. Navin Perera, Mr. Thushara Perera, Mr. Chandima Hulangamuwa, representatives from National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka and other esteemed guests.

The ceremony featured a grand student parade, the awarding of certificates and scholarships and recognition of outstanding performers. Proud parents, faculty members, and representatives from McLarens Group witnessed this milestone moment as graduates were officially inducted into the maritime profession.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ravi Edirisinghe commended McLarens Maritime Academy for its dedication to producing highly skilled seafarers who meet international standards and contribute to the industry’s growth.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Yasas Telwatta, Principal and General Manager of McLarens Maritime Academy highlighted the academy’s commitment to producing skilled maritime professionals who are equipped with the highest standards of training and education. He emphasized the rigorous training programs, the quality of education provided at MMA, and the bright future awaiting graduates in the global shipping industry. He further acknowledged the hard work, discipline, and determination of the students, ensuring they are well-prepared to take on their roles in the maritime sector.

MMA graduates have an excellent track record of securing placements in renowned shipping companies worldwide, and this batch is expected to follow the same path. The academy continues to provide high- quality training programs that align with global industry standards, ensuring a strong career foundation for aspiring seafarers.
