The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF), the apex body representing Sri Lanka’s apparel industry, welcomes the launch of the Clean Sri Lanka programme, spearheaded by H. E. President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and the government. With sustainability as a core principle, the Sri Lankan apparel sector is uniquely positioned to complement this nationwide movement for environmental, social and governance initiatives.

For several decades, the Sri Lankan apparel industry has emerged a global leader in ethical manufacturing, integrating cutting-edge practices such as carbon-neutral production facilities, renewable energy utilization, and water and waste reduction initiatives across its value chain. Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of the industry—from the design table to the factory floor. The Clean Sri Lanka programme provides an opportunity for the apparel sector to further extend its commitment to a greener, cleaner Sri Lanka by working hand-in-hand with the government and stakeholders. During the launch of Clean Sri Lanka, President Dissanayake stated it is his firm resolution together with public support to usher in transformative change for the country. The President described this as both a challenge and responsibility he is fully committed to fulfilling.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in her address during the parliamentary debate, highlighted the voluntary and collaborative spirit behind the programme. “The Clean Sri Lanka programme is not something that should be implemented by force, but rather through the will and participation of all,” she emphasized. The initiative seeks to integrate environmental, social, and moral principles to inspire transformative change within individuals and communities, fostering a society rooted in good governance and sustainability.

Commenting on the alignment between JAAF’s vision and the Clean Sri Lanka programme, JAAF Secretary-General Yohan Lawrence said, “As a pioneer in sustainable practices, the Sri Lankan apparel industry is ready to contribute to the Clean Sri Lanka initiative. We have demonstrated our leadership on the global stage by adopting circular fashion, minimizing environmental footprints, and championing worker empowerment. This initiative offers a powerful opportunity to further integrate these principles into our nation’s broader transformation journey.”

The apparel industry already plays a significant role in advancing green practices, including the widespread adoption of solar energy and innovative water and waste management systems. By partnering with the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, JAAF envisions scaling these efforts, sharing best practices, and empowering communities with sustainable solutions.

Beyond its environmental impact, the Clean Sri Lanka programme provides a platform for collective action. With guidance from a 19-member Presidential Task Force, the initiative aims to implement district-level projects, promote awareness, and foster social responsibility. JAAF pledges to be an active partner in these efforts, advocating sustainability and good governance through its expansive network of industry stakeholders.

As Sri Lanka embarks on this transformative journey, JAAF remains steadfast in its mission to create a future where sustainability is the norm, not the exception, reaffirming the apparel sector’s role as a catalyst for meaningful change. Together with the Clean Sri Lanka programme, JAAF is committed to shaping a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable nation.
