On the occasion of Rokeya Day, Dhaka University’s Rokeya Hall organized various day-long programs on 09 January 2025 Thursday. The programs included a rally, Begum Rokeya Memorial Foundation Lecture, Awarding of Gold Medals and Scholarships, etc.
On this occasion, a Memorial Foundation Lecture, Gold Medal and Scholarship Distribution Ceremony was organized at Rokeya Hall Auditorium in the evening. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan spoke as the chief guest at the Event.
The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Hosne Ara Begum, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Begum Rokeya family member Majeda Saber spoke as special guests. Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University and former Pro-Pro Vice Chancellor of the Hall, Professor Dr. Jinnatun Nesa Tahmida Begum, delivered a commemorative speech titled ‘Begum Rokeya’s Dream: Women’s Empowerment and Social Progress’. Deans of various faculties, Pro-Professors of various halls, former Pro-Professors of Rokeya Hall, alumni, students and guardians were present at the event. Warda Rihab and Tasmia Naureen, Resident Teachers of the Hall, conducted the Event.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan paid deep tribute to the memory of the great woman Begum Rokeya and said, she struggled to build a society without discrimination. There are still many inequalities in our society. Therefore, the ideals and history of struggle of Begum Rokeya are still relevant in our society. Congratulating the students who received gold medals and scholarships, the Vice Chancellor said, Begum Rokeya’s ideals, struggle and personality should be reflected in the lives of the Students.
Suraiya Zebin Papiya, a student of the Department of Political Science, has won the Begum Rokeya Memorial Foundation Gold Medal this year. The merit scholarship recipients are Malik Fariha Mehnaz (Law), Farhana Faisal Satta (Management), Sadia Nasrin Sara (Ocean Science) and Sushmita Talukder (Pharmacy). The general scholarship recipients are Ferdous Afrin (Biochemistry and Molecular Science), Priya Kundu (Disaster Science and Climate Resilience), Shimu Kar (Political Science) and Nazia Hossain (Plant Science). In addition, Afrin Akhter Ritu, a student of the Department of Geography and Environment, has received the Welfare Scholarship.
