The Indian Cultural Association (ICA) announces its first Half-Marathon in Colombo to promote organ donation awareness

Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Indian Cultural Association (ICA) is proud to announce its first International Half-Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, September 1, 2024. This landmark event will bring together the marathon enthusiasm from across the world and Sri Lankan friends of all ages in a celebration of health, unity, and community support.

 



 

The half-marathon, which aims to create awareness about the importance of organ donations, will feature three race categories: Half-Marathon (21.0975 km), Challengers Run (10 km) and the Family-run (5 km). The scenic race route will start and end at Galle Face Green, passing through Marine Drive, Galle Road, Colombo Fort and other picturesque locations in Colombo.

As the torchbearer for promoting organ donation, the ICA’s half-marathon is committed to encouraging participants and the wider community to consider self-pledging for this vital cause. In addition to this primary objective, the event aims to leave a lasting positive green impact by planting Na Trees, in local schools, symbolising a green footprint from each of the race participant. The Na Tree is known as the national tree of Sri Lanka and was selected for its utility, and historic and cultural importance. Post-race all overseas participants will be encouraged to visit notable tourist destinations, providing a substantial boost to Sri Lankan tourism.

All runners will be recognised with a medal and certificate endorsed by supporting organisations. The top three finishers in both the male and female categories will receive significant prize money and trophies. The event will conclude with an evening, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India and Sri Lanka through music and dance performances, creating an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

The first ICA International Half-Marathon is supported by a distinguished lineup of sponsors and partners, including H.E. The President of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Minister of Tourism and Sports, the Hon. Minister of Education, H.E. High Commissioner of India, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and several other agencies.

The Indian Cultural Association of Sri Lanka, established in 2018 by a group of 160 Indian expatriates, has become a vibrant community that celebrates and promotes Indian culture and traditions in Sri Lanka. Through events like these, half-marathon the ICA continues to strengthen ties between the Indian community and the diverse population of Sri Lanka.
