16-year-old Ranithma Liyanage won the singles and doubles titles in the Women’s Badminton event at the 47th National Games.
National Badminton Champion Ranithma Liyanage, after her victory, said that it is her dream to win a gold medal for Sri Lanka in the upcoming World Junior Badminton Championship and the Asian Junior Badminton Championship.
Ranithma, a 16-year-old student of Kristhudewa Girls’ College, Baddegama recently won the Women’s Badminton Doubles Championship representing the Southern Province at the National Games held at the Sri Lanka Badminton Federation Courts. She was also crowned the Best Player in the tournament.
In the Women’s Singles finals at the National Games, Liyanage beat Praveena Wijesundara from Vayambha Province and later on teamed up with Nadeesha Gayathri to defeat Kavindi Ishadika and Buthmi Galagamage from Western Province in the women’s doubles finals.
Apart from winning the Women’s Singles and Doubles Championship at the 70th National Badminton Championship held last January,
Ranithma also won the U17 title at the 38th Junior Badminton Championships.
Commenting on her achievements, she mentioned that any young player will have the opportunity to progress if they practice with dedication. She also thanked all the coaches, the President and officials at the School Badminton Association and the President and officials at the Sri Lanka Badminton Association.
